Nell Campbell is a documentary photographer who lives in Santa Barbara, California. Campbell was born in Biloxi, Mississippi and spent her childhood in New Orleans and Lake Charles, Louisiana.  Campbell’s forty plus years of documentary photography includes projects concerned with issues of cultural representation and social justice: anti-war demonstrations during the Vietnam and Iraq wars; organizing drives of the United Farm Workers Union in 1976-77; a six year documentation of Mardi Gras in New Orleans; panorama landscape photographs of the wetlands of southwestern Louisiana; documentation of Louisiana after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita; street photography in Havana and campesinos in the Pinar Del Rio and Valle de Los Ingenios regions of rural Cuba and Duck Blinds: Louisiana, a fifteen year documentation of handmade hunting blinds located on the Calcasieu River of southwestern Louisiana.

In addition to her photographic work, Campbell works as a photo editor, writer and commercial photographer. Louisiana Cultural Vistas, the magazine of the Louisiana Endowment of the Humanities, published photographic essays by Campbell in 2004 and 2006.  An image from the Duck Blind series was published in the January 2012 issue of Harper’s Magazine.  The British magazine The World of Interiors, published a profile article on the Duck Blind project in April 2014.  Since 2000, Campbell has written profile articles on photographers for BW, COLOR and Photographer’s Forum magazines and has written articles for Santa Barbara Seasons on people who make cascarones for Fiesta in Santa Barbara and an article on fisherman and Ridgeback shrimp for Edible Santa Barbara.

Campbell’s photographs have been exhibited at galleries in California, Louisiana and Maine. The Santa Barbara Museum of Art, The Wildling Museum of Art and Nature and the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans have exhibited Campbell’s photographs and have her photographs in their permanent collections.
