Santa Barbara Artist Directory member David J Diamant has been commissioned to create a mural downtown as part of The Postcards of Santa Barbara Public Mural Project. This recently approved enterprise enlists Diamant and 16 other artists to each paint an individual 8-foot-by-6-foot mural at "The Shed" on lower State Street. Diamant will be working on his piece “divefly” (pictured), which begins its installation in August and should be comletely up by the beginning of September.

The project is a community-oriented one, including other local artists such as Danny MezaD. A. Metrov, Earl Arnold, Matt Rodriguez and Jonathon Hernandez. Their temporary murals will be up for a year, but they will live on in print: each artist’s mural will be printed on postcards to be sold as a benefit for the local youth program Youth Interactive

Youth Interactive is an international creative entrepreneurship academy with a local branch downtown on Anacapa Street. The program bridges the gap between opportunity and economic standing and helps youths become self-sufficient in creatively fulfilling ways, with the help of a variety of local professionals who lend their expertise.

The Postcards of Santa Barbara project has been in the works since early last year year, when Amass Gallery closed and left Youth Interactive artists without a space to showcase their work and interact with the community. In response, a group of collaborators including YI's Nathalie Gensac worked tirelessly to secure a new space to show off Santa Barbara's homegrown talent. "I for one hope it will work to really reflect the best of our city, benefit our great local artists and SB’s unique collaborative community," says Gensac.

Keep your eyes peeled for these wonderful pieces of public art as they go up this summer!
